Dear !*FIRSTNAME*!,

Thank you for your continuing support. This is our 12th newsletter and I’m proud to see how popular it is getting.

We are now featuring a new section called “Serious Gears” where we will be talking about equipment we have tested think is reliable. This will help you with 4X4 purchases in the future. There are a lot of aftermarket products out there and sometimes the choice is too big!

So if you have a piece of equipment, camping gear, tool etc.. that you reckon has served you well, please do not hesitate to let us know.

This is the month where most will plan their (Australian) winter holidays. Yes I know, it is only February, but don’t you need to go and see your boss and ask for time off this winter??

If you are looking at doing a tour on the Canning Stock route with Exprim, now is the time to book it, places are becoming limited.

Until next time,

Eric Chantelat, managing director.

Serious Gears!

Why take so many spares with you? When with a reliable tire repair kit they are so easy to fix. This particular set (see picture) is perfect for tubeless tires. Any punctures within the pattern of the tire can be easily fixed without having to take it off the rim. As 4WD tires become tougher, you need solid tools that won’t break at the first attempt. This "Safety Seal" set has proven worthy and reliable. We have been using it for many years now and it has never failed us.

Location: South of Lake Disappointment, Canning Stock Route.

As the track slowly merged into the salt lake, we judged the terrain ahead too "unpredictable" and decided to reverse on our own wheel tracks. But during the process the back of the car veered off half a metre to the left and that's was it; the left back wheel sunk like rock in water! Fortunately we have our precious sand-ladders which got us out of trouble in no time. Just remember: if the salt looks purple, it means it is not good to drive on. The moisture underneath the plaques of salt is too high and the salt reflects it by turning purple. Anyway, it is NEVER a good idea to drive onto a salt lake. The marks will stay there for many years after and will tarnish the beauty of the lake for others to enjoy.

Most commonly asked questions about our tours:

Canning Stock Route testimonial August 2005

"How many people in the vehicle?"
Maximum of three (plus guide) for short trips (Great Victoria Desert - 8 days) and two for longer trips (Canning Stock Route - 12/17days).
You choose who is coming along.

"Tailor-made?"
Yes, we are the only company in Australia offering private desert trips.
You choose the travelling pace.

"What is included in private tours?"
Everything; food, accommodation, camping equipment. All you need to bring is yourself and a good camera!
Sit down, relax and let us take care of the rest.

"What about safety?"
Because most trips are made with a single vehicle, the 4WD is completely self-sufficient.
The 4WD is equipped with the following:
Communication: UHF radio, HF radio and Satellite Phone.
Recovery: Electric winch, sand ladders, sand anchor, air compressor, snatch straps, spare wheels, tools, etc...
Health: Comprehensive first aid kit, senior first aid qualified guide, direct access to Royal Flying Doctor Service.
Navigation: GPS, detailed maps, compass, and a knowledgeable guide!

"When a friend suggested to me we do a tour of the Canning Stock Route, I was a trifle dubious.

I had done almost twenty years working up north and I thought I knew the lot. What a misapprehension I was under.
Some two month ago I met Eric Chantelat of Exprim Tours. He unfolded the desert areas which I claimed I knew so well; animal life, bird life, vegetation, physiographical wells, Eric was brilliant.

Better was to follow; his bon appetite cooking; roast, desert tacos under the stars to mention a few. One has to be discreet though. On my return, my wife took exception to my liberal praise for the desert chef & I was soon jerked back to reality.

In conclusion, we travelled the Stock Route in a long wheeled base Land Cruiser. The vehicle lacked nothing as we had an extremely experienced guide with us. I thought his safety measures were of the highest standard.

My mate and I (along with Eric) had a truly wonderful time on the Canning Stock Route."
